Discussion:
Network traffic between my router and my ISP?

Hello Wireshark users.

I have installed wireshark on my laptop. That laptop is connected to my
wireless router, and my wireless router is connected to my ISP through an
ADSL modem.

Can I get the instance of wireshark running on my laptop to collect network
traffic between router and ISP?

Two months ago, I had asked for my network quota to be increased from 1G to
5G per month because I was getting throttled on 1G a couple of days before
month end. However, my ISP is now telling me that I have reached 80% of my
5G quota. As I have not significantly changed my usage, I am wondering how
it could be that my network activity has increased five fold.

Thanks,

Owen.

You can place a switch between the Wireless Router and ADSL modem and
span the correct ports.
Then you connect your laptop to the switch with a wire to the spanned
port and then you can capture the traffic between your router and
modem.

Well once you've put a managed switch there you probably want to use
the statistics of the switch instead of wireshark to calculate
volumes.

Thanks fellas.

It looks a bit involved. I'll check if my modem gives me these figures.

A router with the tomato firmware would probably be best as it gives you many options for bandwidth utilization graphs.

To save you some time, if you'd like to use Tomato, the best buy is a
Linksys WRT54GL. *L* is important, it indicates that it is runnig Linux.
